Why Taking Time Off Is Good for Business (Yes, Even for You, the Owner)

Last week, I did something that’s not always easy for business owners. I fully unplugged. I took a week off, turned off notifications, stepped away from my inbox, and gave myself permission to not check in. And you know what? It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.
As business owners, we’re constantly juggling demands, wearing multiple hats, and keeping our eyes on every moving part. There’s a deeply rooted fear that if we step away, even for a moment, everything could fall apart. But here’s the truth: stepping away is not a sign of weakness. It is a strategic move that keeps us sharp, healthy, and aligned with our long-term vision.
Why We Struggle to Take Time Off
Let’s be honest. Entrepreneurship is personal. Whether you run a small business, lead a growing team, or manage a busy brokerage, you’ve likely built your brand with a mix of sweat equity, late nights, and heart. Walking away, even temporarily, can feel like walking away from a piece of yourself.
In the real estate industry especially, the pressure to be “always on” is real. Clients, agents, and transactions often operate on tight timelines, and our phones rarely stop buzzing. But burnout is also real. Creativity dwindles. Leadership becomes reactive instead of intentional. And when you’re constantly running on empty, you can’t pour from an empty cup, which will inevitably impact your clients, your team, or your business.
How to Prepare Your Business for Your Absence
The key to taking meaningful time off is planning. Here’s how I made it work, and how you can too.
1. Start with a Clear Plan
Before stepping away, I reviewed my calendar and looked at what absolutely needed attention before I left. I delegated tasks, adjusted timelines, and communicated my schedule with clients and collaborators in advance. This helped set clear expectations and gave everyone peace of mind.
2. Empower Your Team
Whether you have a full team or just a few trusted contractors, your business should be able to run without you. This does not mean you are not needed. It means you have built something sustainable. For me, this meant ensuring each person knew their role, had access to what they needed, and felt confident handling things without me.
3. Automate What You Can
From scheduled social media posts to automated email responses, there are plenty of tools that can help maintain your presence without requiring you to be online. These little systems help keep the wheels turning even when you are not around.
4. Trust the Process
This might be the hardest part. Trust the systems you have put in place. Remind yourself that stepping away is part of being a good leader. A business that can operate in your absence is one that is resilient and ready to grow.
What I Gained From Unplugging
The week away gave me clarity. I had space to think, not just react. It reminded me of why I do what I do, allowing myself to relax and be really present with my family. I returned with fresh ideas, renewed energy, and a deeper connection to why I do what I do. I was also reminded that rest is not a luxury for business owners. It is a responsibility. If we want to lead well, grow sustainably, and show up fully, we have to make time to step back.
If you are feeling stretched thin, take this as your sign. Your business will survive your absence. In fact, it might even thrive because of it. Give yourself permission to rest, to breathe, and to reconnect with the parts of your life that exist outside of the office.
You don’t have to do it all, all the time. You just have to build something that is strong enough to keep going while you take care of yourself.
