Lessons from the Blue Jays

This past season, the Toronto Blue Jays reminded Canada why baseball is more than just a game. Even though their playoff run ended in heartbreak, the team’s spirit, sportsmanship, and resilience captured the hearts of fans across the country. The Jays played more than baseball; they united a nation. For many, it was not just about the wins or losses, but about unity, leadership, and what it means to stand together through challenges.

For me, being a lifelong Blue Jays fan started when I was six years old. I still remember watching games with my Lola, her voice rising in excitement every time one of our boys in blue stepped up to the plate. She loved her Jays! Those moments became a core memory that shaped how I see teamwork, passion, and loyalty.

As I watched this season unfold, I knew we had somehting special this year. A team with heart and determination, not to mention strong leadership, earned their way to the World Series. It was amazing to see Jays gear everywhere you went, uniting people across Canada. Seeing this, I could not help but think about how these same principles translate into the world of real estate.

1. Teamwork Over Individual Glory

Baseball, much like real estate, is often seen as an individual pursuit. The batter stands alone at the plate, just as a REALTOR® might seem to work independently when closing a deal. Yet, success does not happen in isolation. Every player depends on their teammates: the coach who sets the strategy, the bullpen that keeps the energy high, and the fielders who have each other’s backs.

In real estate, it is the same. Behind every strong brokerage or team is a network of people, including agents, administrators, marketers, and support staff. Each person plays an important role in helping the business thrive. True success comes when everyone works toward a shared goal and trusts that their contribution matters.

2. Leadership Means Empowering Others

Leadership in baseball can often be quiet, focused, and strategic. John Schneider, the Blue Jays’ manager, reflects that perfectly. I remember watching a game with my daughter when she pointed out that he rarely smiles. I thought that was an interesting observation. He is focused on his players and the game’s strategy, and his composure shows the importance of steady leadership. It is not about being the loudest voice, but about being the most consistent and dependable one.

Cito Gaston’s leadership in the early 1990s remains one of the most respected in Canadian sports history. He led with calm, confidence, and trust, and he never lost sight of his players’ potential. Today’s Blue Jays show that same strength under pressure, especially through the example of rookie Trey Yesavage. While new to the roster, he proved that when you bring your all, you can make it. He was one of the strongest starters, if not the strongest, and a reminder that leadership is also about recognizing and nurturing emerging talent.

In a real estate office, effective leadership means creating an environment where every team member feels supported, encouraged, and valued. Leaders who empower others build stronger, more resilient organizations that can weather market fluctuations and tough seasons.

3. Legacy and Mentorship Matter

When the Jays brought back past players to celebrate their history, it was more than nostalgia. It was a reminder that legacy matters and that success is built on those who came before.

In real estate, mentorship plays the same role. Experienced agents, brokers, and business owners have a responsibility to share their knowledge with the next generation. Passing down those lessons keeps the culture strong and helps the industry continue to evolve.

4. Resilience in the Face of Loss

The Jays’ final game this season was tough to watch and a heartbreaker for every fan. Yet their grace and unity in defeat spoke volumes. They reminded us that setbacks are part of every journey and that how you respond defines your future.

In real estate, challenging markets can test even the most experienced professionals. Resilience, the ability to regroup, refocus, and keep moving forward, is what separates good teams from great ones.

Watching the Jays with my kids has been memories in the making. So grateful to the Jays for bringing us all together!

This season, the Toronto Blue Jays did more than play baseball. They reminded us what it means to be a team and what it means to lead with integrity, and they united people across this amazing country of ours. In the same way, the best real estate offices and businesses are not built on individual achievements alone. They are built on trust, shared goals, and the belief that success is always a collective effort.

Just like cheering for the Jays with my Lola years ago, I now share that same excitement with my daughter. Baseball, for us, has always been about more than the game. It is about connection, shared passion, and the memories that last a lifetime.
