Why the Rooms You’re in Matter

There’s something powerful about being in the right room.

After attending and sponsoring UNTD’s CollabCon 2026, I found myself reflecting on just how much energy, perspective, and opportunity can come from being surrounded by the right people. Not just people in real estate, but the right people for where you are in your business and your life.

This reflection feels particularly timely. As The Real Estate Source approaches its three-year milestone, I’ve been looking back on a career that spans more than two decades in corporate marketing and communications, and nearly three decades connected to the real estate industry as a whole. One thing has remained consistent through all of it: the importance of people, and the environments you choose to engage with them.

In an industry that often leans heavily on digital marketing, automation, and lead generation systems, it’s easy to underestimate the value of face-to-face connection. But real estate has always been, and will continue to be, a relationship-driven business. Events and networking are not optional. They are foundational.

Your Sphere of Influence Is Your Business

Whether you are a REALTOR®, a broker-owner, or part of an administrative team, your sphere of influence shapes your trajectory. Your sphere is not just your database. It is the collective group of people who influence your thinking, challenge your assumptions, refer business, and open doors. It includes peers, mentors, partners, and even competitors.

Events like CollabCon bring this into sharp focus. When you are in a room with professionals who are open, collaborative, and growth-minded, it changes how you see your own business. Conversations become more meaningful. Ideas flow more freely. You start to think bigger.

On the flip side, if your sphere is stagnant or overly insular, it can quietly limit your potential. The same conversations lead to the same outcomes.

The Rooms You Choose Matter

Not all rooms are created equal. Some rooms are transactional. Others are transformational.

The key is being intentional about where you show up.

Are you attending events that challenge you?

Are you putting yourself in environments where collaboration is encouraged over competition?

Are you surrounding yourself with people who are building, innovating, and pushing the industry forward?

For brokers and leaders, this is especially critical. The rooms you choose influence not only your own perspective, but also the culture you bring back to your team. Exposure to new ideas, new models, and new ways of thinking can have a direct impact on recruitment, retention, and overall business performance.

For administrative professionals, the same applies. Too often, this group is overlooked when it comes to networking opportunities, yet they are the backbone of many successful operations. Being in the right rooms can elevate skill sets, build confidence, and create career pathways that may not have been visible before.

Reassessing Your Circle Is Not a Bad Thing

As your business evolves, so should your network. There is a natural tendency to hold on to the same circles, the same events, and the same relationships. And while loyalty matters, growth sometimes requires change.

Reassessing your sphere of influence is not about cutting people out. It is about ensuring alignment. Are the people around you supporting where you are going? Are they aligned with your values? Are they contributing to your growth, and are you contributing to theirs?

It is okay if the answer changes over time. Careers in real estate are long and multifaceted. What served you in your first two years may not serve you in your tenth. The rooms that once felt expansive can start to feel limiting. Recognizing that shift is a sign of growth, not disloyalty.

Events as a Strategic Investment

Attending events should be approached with the same level of intention as any other business investment.

It is not just about showing up. It is about how you show up.

  • Are you going in with clear objectives?

  • Are you open to new conversations, or sticking to what is comfortable?

  • Are you following up and building on the connections you make?

Sponsorship adds another layer. It positions your brand within the community and signals a commitment to supporting the industry. But the real value comes from engagement. The conversations at your booth, the relationships you build, and the impressions you leave are what drive long-term return.

Bringing It Back to Your Business

The real work begins after the event. What did you learn? Who did you meet? What ideas challenged your current way of thinking?

Too often, the momentum from events fades quickly because there is no plan to integrate those insights into daily operations. The most successful professionals take what they have gained and apply it. They refine processes, test new strategies, and continue the conversations they started.

They also stay connected. A strong network is not built in a single event. It is nurtured over time through consistent, genuine engagement.

Real estate is a business built on people. The systems, tools, and strategies matter, but they are amplified, or limited, by the people you surround yourself with. The rooms you choose to be in will shape your perspective, your opportunities, and ultimately your success.

So take a moment to reflect.

Are you in the right rooms?

Are you building the right sphere of influence?

And just as importantly, are you showing up in a way that adds value to the rooms you are in?

At The Real Estate Source, collaboration is not just a word we throw around likely. It is the foundation of how we work. As we approach three years in business, the goal remains the same: to connect people with the ideas, strategies, and resources that move their business forward.

If you are feeling stuck, looking to refresh your approach, or simply need a trusted resource to sense-check where you are and where you are going, that is exactly what we are here for. Like the name suggests, The Real Estate Source is about being just that, a source of insight, support, and meaningful connection for professionals across the industry.

Reach out. Start the conversation. The right room might be one connection away.
